My Colouring Book Collection

My Colouring Book Collection | Life of Dahlia

Hey Everyone, Today I’m sharing with you my colouring book collection. These aren’t your average colouring book, these are for one more expensive and much better quality than something you might see intended for children.

The adult colouring book trend has been quite big in the last few years and I have gathered quite a collection. So far I’ve particularly loved the ones released by Johanna Basford which is what I’m going to share with you today.

I’m going to include links to the books on her website just in case you are interested in purchasing any of them, I will link them throughout this post in the names of each book just so you know where to expect to find them. None of these are affiliate links they are just so you know where to find them.

My Johanna Basford Colouring Book Collection

I’ve really fallen in love with Johanna Basford’s magical worlds that she brings to life through stunning illustrations or as she likes to call them inky tales. She created them but it’s up to us to bring them to life by colouring them in and this makes each copy so individual.

‘Ivy and the Inky Butterfly’ was released in 2017 and was Johanna’s first colouring book that also included a story. This book has some magical scenes and characters, it follows Ivy’s story, a young girl who discovers a secret door that leads to a magical world.

I’ve only coloured a couple of pages but my hope this year is to take more time to spend on my other creative hobbies including colouring, art journaling and photography.

I love the story of this book and I love the elements of curiosities as well as magical worlds and curious creatures.

World of Flowers‘ is Johanna’s newest books it was inspired by her grandmother who was both an avid gardener and artist.

What I love about each of her books is they take you on an inky tale that’s just waiting for you to bring them to life through your own imagination and this one is no exception, it filled with beautiful illustrations of flora and gardeners delights.

Enchanted Forest by Johanna Basford

‘Enchanted Forest’ was one of the first books that I purchased from Johanna Basford along with ‘Secret Garden‘ and is also one of my favourites. I keep going back to this one time and time again.

This book takes you on a magical journey into an enchanted forest filled with woodland creatures and magical castles. I love that even though most of her books don’t have words that have and underlying story and theme through out.

Lost Ocean By Johanna Basford

Lost Ocean‘ also has to be another one of my favourites, inspired by what lays under the sea this has some beautiful illustrations filled with octopi, exotic fish and magical mermaids.

Like many of Johanna’s other books, this has a little treasure hunt which is placed throughout the many stunning illustrations, this one, in particular, has shipwrecks and pirates treasure to continue that underwater theme.

Magical Jungle By Johanna Basford

I picked up ‘Magical Jungle’ in 2016 not long after it released, as the name suggests this one has a jungle theme and includes some beautiful illustrations of exotic animals both big and small.

My favourite that I’ve done so far is this giant butterfly which I notice a theme of throughout her books and these have to be some of my favourites to colour in because I love butterflies.

Secret Garden by Johanna Basford

‘Secret Garden’ was Johanna’s first book and includes beautiful gardens and creatures hidden throughout.

I love using all sorts of mediums to colour in from markers to pencils each one gives a unique look to the illustrations. And even if you feel like you are lacking artistic skills it doesn’t matter because you can easily create whatever your heart desires through colouring in these beautiful illustrations while diving into a magical tale all at the same time.

I think what I love about her books apart from the stories and themes is the focus on nature, I remember having to study Botanical Illustration when I was studying Media Arts in my early adulthood and these illustrations take that idea of documenting the many beautiful species of plants we have on our planet but with something extra.

One of my other hobbies is taking pictures of nature particularly flowers and I think that’s why I love these books so much when I’m colouring in these illustrations it gives me that same happiness as if I was out photographing nature.

What are your favourite colouring books? any recommendations? let me know

Elements Series Phoenix (fire)

Elements Series – Phoenix (Fire) | Life Of Dahlia

Update: I have finally got around to finishing this series so I thought that I would reshare this post so that I could post all the posts in succession of each other. I decided to re-write/ edit this post to add more information, imagery and to fit in with my vision for this series.

Hey Everyone today I’m resharing with you my image for Fire, I renamed this image Phoenix as I wanted to name all my image something that represented the elements they were inspired by but without using the obvious names.

This was the first Element that I start with because It was the first one I was really drawn to and could come up with a concept for. I really wanted to go for something dramatic but a little bit rough around the edges, so a lot of texture.

I had thought about redoing this concept to fit in with my other image but I really think this just fits well for the concept so I decided to leave it as is.

Phoenix (Inspired by The Fire Element)

Makeup

This look kind of put itself together I had no real idea what I wanted to do when I started, I just went with what felt right at the time. I knew that I wanted to use a lot of red in this look but I also wanted to add in elements of black and gold in there as well.

I decided to include lots of texture so I decided to create a wing shape that went all the way out toward my hairline and add some texture with the blending out around my eyes to represent flames.

I wanted to add in some gold, to add a pop of brightness to the inner corner and then brought it up to the eye to create some texture on top of the red.

I added in the little black dots as if the fire was burning and it was soot or ash falling on my cheeks, I really wanted to use a flicking motion to get a more random effect but, unfortunately, I just couldn’t get that to work so I decided to just do small dots instead.

For the lips, I decided to add in some similar colours to the eyes, I was originally going to do a nude so the eyes were the focus but it looked incomplete so I decided to match the lips to colours in the eyes instead and I really like the way it came out.

Inspiration

I really wanted all the looks that I created for this series to stand out on there own, I wanted them to incorporate and represent their own elements. For fire, I decided to go with a more editorial look as I wanted it to have texture and colours that represented the Element.

I’m so happy with the way this look came out, I have been really struggling lately with finding inspiration and being able to execute it into something original. Its been a long time since I’ve created something that feels like art, I think I just need to realise that maybe my art is changing and is different from what I imagined it to be.

To create texture in my image I used a homemade tutu that I had made up for photo shoots, I just thought that the colours would go really well and it would help with the flame look I was going for.

The Photographing & Editing Process

After creating my makeup look and taking some photos, (check out my photography set up hereI imported my images into Lightroom, from here I like to narrow down the photos I took before importing anything into Photoshop. Lightroom allows me to find the best image and make some basic changes before getting into the deeper editing process.

For this image, I didn’t have to do a lot of editing (you can see my editing process in the video below), I mainly had a few tweaks and add in some of the tulle into one area to give a more symmetrical look.

In the video above I show two images I edited for this element, I mainly did this so that I could share them on Instagram.

I’m so happy to be able to share all my images from this series with you. I will also be sharing everything on my Instagram pages, I’m excited to share it there and see all the series together.

6 Mood Lifters - Things I Like To Do To Lift My Mood | Life Of Dahlia

6 Mood Lifters – Things I Like To Do To Lift My Mood | Life Of Dahlia

Hey everyone, today I’m sharing with you a more uplifting post all about my favourite mood-lifters. I wanted to make sure that I included some more positive posts this month so I thought It would be great to share some of my favourite ways to do self-care.

6 Of My Favourite Mood Lifters

When I’m feeling anxious or stressed these are some of the things I like really like doing for my self-care.

  • Taking some time out from Social Media (We live in such a full on world these days taking some time away from social media and the internet can help declutter your brain.)
  • Listen to some tunes (I find this really therapeutic almost like meditation.)
  • Read a book or listen to an audio book (I find this a great form of meditation particularly listening to an audio book It can easy to block out any negative thoughts and just listen to the narrative.)
  • Watch a Movie or TV Show (I personally love a continuing story so a movie series or tv series are my favourites.)
  • Getting Creative (I love colouring in books, Johanna Basford has some of my favourites, I find them very therapeutic and you don’t need to be an amazing artist to enjoy them. I also love books like wreak this journal which also promotes creativity.)
  • Get Out In Nature (This could mean a lot of things, I love sitting in my backyard and listening to the birds and watching the wind through the plants, but getting out in nature could mean going for a walk or hike.)

What are your favourite mood lifters? Let me know in the comments.

I hope you enjoyed this post, I would love to know what you like doing for self-care? Lets start a conversation in the comments.

As you know this month I’m focusing on mental health, its something that’s really important to me and that’s why I’m supporting Liptember this month with my Rainbow Pouts sisters. If you haven’t already please go check out our social media pages and consider making a donation through our Official Liptember Donation page.

No matter how big or small it helps liptember’s charity partners continue their services, which help provide services for women in Australia.

10 Things You Don't Know About Me | Life of Dahlia

10 Things You Don’t Know About Me | Life Of Dahlia

Hey, guys, we are getting a bit personal today, I’m going to share with you 10 things you may not know about me. I feel like I’m turning over a new leaf with my blog I want to share myself and hopefully put a little bit of my personality into my writing, I’ve felt like I haven’t really done that much in the past, I was always more straight to the point but I feel like that can be a bit boring for people to read.

I guess I want to keep that but add some more of me in there because I know long posts can be hard to read. If you are anything like me you and have a short attention span, long posts can be overwhelming.

10_things_you_dont_know_about_me_selfportraits_life_of_dahlia

Some Interesting Facts About Me:

1. I love learning, no seriously I am always looking to learn new things. I have been studying on and off for many years, I’m drawn to creative courses and I have studied at least seven or so different courses over the years in art, photography, graphic design and now makeup. I’m an artist at heart so I’m always looking to learn and explore different things.

2. I love photography, I don’t know but you may have guessed that already. I’ve been fascinated with photography since I was young, I would play with my mum’s old film camera and take pictures of all different kinds of things. I studied darkroom photography which was really interesting to learn but these days I tend to stick with my digital camera, it’s easier and cheaper in the long run.

3. I’ve always been fascinated with the past and by that, I mean different times and what things were in fashion at the time. I think that’s why I love collecting things that remind me of those times, like vintage clothing or jewellery, cameras or tea sets.

4. I take self-portraits, well actually I haven’t done it in a while but I do love the process I’m hoping to get back into it soon. By self-portrait, I don’t mean a selfie of my makeup it’s much deeper than that, it’s about creating a story through photography.

5. I’m a Sci-Fi Buff, I’ll blame my mum for that it’s her fault I’m addicted to sci-fi and fantasy shows. It all started with Stargate: SG1 and went from there.

10_things_you_dont_know_about_me_nature_life_of_dahlia

6. I love fantasy stories and am inspired by them, growing up my mum would read us stories like Harry Potter and we would watch movies Like The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland or Labyrinth, which are my all-time favourites. Ever since I’ve just found lots of inspiration in stories and have wanted to create them in my own way.

7. Listening to music is one of my favourite things, I will often listen to my current favourite band or album (which currently is Alter Bridge) before I go to bed it helps me relax and do a bit of mindfulness to calm my brain before going to sleep.

8. I love nature, though I definitely need to get out and enjoy it more, one of my favourite things to do is take photos of flowers there are so many and I just think they are beautiful.

9. I have an odd personality I decorate my space with lighter colours and fantasy inspired objects, but I listen to rock music and dress in band t-shirts and dark colours.

10. The last thing you may not know about me is that I have a few pets, I have 1 dog his names Olli, his like my child and I have two fish tanks 1 big and 1 small with approx 20 fish overall, I want to get some more though there is still plenty of room in my big one. I was addicted to the show Tanked and it inspired me to buy a fish tank, its hard work mainly the cleaning and water change but I love feeding them every morning and watching them play together.

There you go that’s 10 things you may not know about me, I hope you enjoyed reading it and I would love to know if we have anything in common.

What are your favourite things to do? Do you have any Pets or Hobbies?

Sapphire Inspired Makeup Look © Life of Dahlia

Makeup – Sapphire Inspired Creative Makeup Look | Life of Dahlia

Hey there makeup lovers, I’ve been really inspired of late to create some different makeup looks. I want to step out of my makeup comfort zone and create some unique and playful looks. I’ve been really inspired to use colour, both in makeup looks but also matching with my wigs and backgrounds. If you follow me on Instagram you may have noticed that I’m using a lot of colour in my posts.

I want my blog and my Instagram to be fun and share my love of colour. I’m still figuring out what I’m doing, and what colour themes I want to stick with. I see all these nicely styled pictures on white backgrounds and while they look lovely, I feel like it’s really hard to get noticed when everyone else looks exactly the same, I also feel like they are just not me. Like I said I’m still figuring it out and I hope over time I can get better with styling photos.

_MG_1177blog

I’m trying out some new techniques that you may notice in future looks, I’ve been trying out the faux bleach brow look. It’s taken me a while to master it but it was just about finding the right products to use. I typicall mix the NYX Professional Makeup eye base in ‘ESB03 skintone’ & Jumbo Pencil in ‘Milk’ and used a disposable mascara wand to comb it through my eyebrows, In this look I just wanted a lighter brow so I went in with a Brow Pomade before hand and then combed through the mix I made to lighten the hairs.

If you’re looking for a tutorial on how to achieve a faux bleach brow you can find one on the Kat Von D Artistry Collective Youtube channel.

I’ve recently purchased some new wigs that I’ve been playing with and I hope to purchase more very soon. I love colouring my hair but I can’t have every hair colour at one time so I love wearing wigs so that I can change colour or length when I want to but without damaging my hair.

I love learning new techniques and I thought that a bleached brow or lighter brow would look interesting with my lighter wigs or for a dramatic look.

_MG_1220blog

I created this look because I wanted to do something different but I wanted to compliment my bright orange wig and my background so I went with blue because I knew it would match well.
