Thrifty Look Book – Styling Thrifted Fashion | Life Of Dahlia

Hey Everyone, in today’s post I wanted to share with you a little lookbook I put together, I was hoping to actually take this on location, but with the weather lately and have been unwell I wasn’t able to. Maybe when the weather gets a bit nicer I’ll get a chance to do some photos on location.

I’m hoping to do a blog post in a couple of weeks all about my set up and what I use to take my photos. So keep an eye out for that, for now, let’s get into this post.

This lookbook has a more wintery theme and shows off my unique style and how I like to style my thrifted finds. My aim was to use all second-hand items, I think there may have ended up being a couple of things in there that were purchased new many years ago but for the most part, I tried to stick to that theme.

Jacket: ASOS (thrifted)
Dress: Angie (thrifted)
Shoes: Ruby Shoes (Purchased New, a few years ago)
Accessories: Unknown

I recently posted some tips for thrifting or op-shopping as we call it here in Australia, you can check it out here if you’re interested.

Today I wanted to talk about how I like to style my outfits, I usually go for an effortless, casual style. I like to be comfortable but still look put together, if that makes sense.

Jumper: Hot Options (given)
Skirt: Unknown (thrifted)
Hat: Unknown (thrifted)
Scarf: Unknown (thrifted)
Boots: Vintage Doc Martens (thrifted)

I mostly wear jeans or leggings but I also like to wear skirts or dresses occasionally. I enjoy pairing my jeans or skirt with a band t-shirt for a casual look.

I mostly stick to neutrals like grey or black but add in a pop of colour, I particularly enjoy jewel tones because its a bit of colour but not in your face and I feel like these are probably colours that would suit most people.

Tshirt: Metallica (thrifted)
Jacket: ICE (thrifted)
Jeans: Rusty (thrifted)
Boots: Vintage Doc Martens (thrifted)
Hat: Unknown (thrifted)

I love pairing one of my motorcycle/ biker jackets with any outfit, they are comfortable but give my outfit a bit of an edge. I have them in several different colours but my go to’s are often my cream or black ones, I feel like they go with pretty much every outfit.

I will often wear something just above my size because in winter I can easily wear a jumper (hoodie) or layers underneath without feeling suffocated or too much tightness around the arms.

For Shoes, I will often wear boots (like my vintage docs) or converse style shoes with most outfits, I like to wear shoes that are comfortable but still look pretty cool. I find that these styles go with most of my outfits.

Accessories are hard actually I don’t wear them often but in the cooler weather, I love wearing a beany or scarf if I’m going out it the cold. or wearing a hoodie underneath my jacket if its particularly cool and I need the extra warmth.

What are your go-to’s for the winter weather? How do you like to style your outfits? let me know below

I hope you enjoyed this post, I can’t wait to plan my next lookbook and share it with you. Coming soon like I mentioned at the beginning of this post I’ll be chatting about my photography and blogging set up really soon.

I have lots going on at the moment and I’m trying not to stress myself out too much so I’m feeling like I need a time out for self-care.

I hope to post again soon. If you have any questions about things you would like to know about like how I edit my photos, or what I use to take them, let me know in the comments.

Opshopping (thrifting) Tips | Life Of Dahlia

Top 5 Opshopping Tips (thrifting) | Life Of Dahlia

Opshopping (thrifting) Tips | Life Of Dahlia

Hey guys, I thought today it would be fun to share with you my tips for going Opshopping or Thrifting, we call it Opshopping in Australia.

Why I Started buying Second Hand Clothes

I’ve probably talked about this before but I thought I would touch on it again. I love op-shopping because not only is it great for the environment (by not wasting resources to create new clothes) but you can also find some real gems.

I’ve always had a unique style one that wasn’t easily accessible in a majority of the mainstream stores, most of the time anyway. I love being able to find unique stuff in op shops, like vintage clothing, vintage doc martens, band t-shirts and so much more.

I decided a few years ago that I was primarily going to buy my clothes second-hand especially after learning about what it takes to create something new. The True Cost is a great documentary to watch it talks all about this.

I admit that I will occasionally buy something brand new but more often than not I will check out my local opshops before purchasing something new. There are just sometimes you just can’t find what you are looking for or need second hand.

So let’s get on to my tips for Op shopping (thrifting).

My Tips For When You Are Going Op-Shopping

  1. Wear clothing that is easy to take off or put clothing over to save time when in the change room. (for females – wear leggings and a top easy to take off or put clothing over.)
  2. Look for things you need (seasonal clothing, a pair of jeans etc)
  3. Check out a size above or below, sizing is never the same, especially for women. (If its slightly to big you can always get it taken in.)
  4. Look for quality pieces (this could be designer brands or just clothing that feels well made. Something that will last a while in your closet.)
  5. This last one might freak some people out but don’t be afraid to check out the shoe department, I’ve found some awesome vintage docs on a couple of my op-shopping trips. My tip though is only to buy things that are practically brand new or good quality. I know people will tell you not to buy second-hand shoes for various reasons but you can often find some unique pieces or practically brand new boots from last season. You can always sanitize your new shoes with disinfectants, just to make sure you don’t catch anything from the previous owner.

Sneek little extra tip – if your a female don’t be afraid to check out the men’s department for band t-shirts, you know if you’re not into Justin Bieber or Twilight.

What are your favourite places to find second-hand fashion? let me know in the comments.

I hope these tips help you on your next Op-shopping or Thrifting adventure. I’m hoping to put together a lookbook very soon using mostly if not all second-hand items, so I can share with you how you can create unique outfits using second-hand clothing and accessories.

I hope you all have a lovely and stress-free day,

Blackmilk Clothing Labyrinth 2.0 Collection | Life of Dahlia

BlackMilk Clothing Labyrinth 2.0 Collection Review | Life of Dahlia

Hey everyone, I’m very excited about sharing this post with you,  if you have been reading my blog for a while you might remember that I posted about the Labyrinth Collection from Blackmilk Clothing last year, about a month ago they released a second collection called Labyrinth 2.0.

I picked up a couple of things because I’m absolutely obsessed with the movie and I’ve been wanting to get some nice leggings, this time I decided to picked up a couple of pairs of leggings, in the styles, ‘Turn Back‘ and ‘Within You‘.

Turn Back Leggings

‘Turn back‘ features a scene from the start of the movie where Jareth first takes Sarah to his world, the image is of the view over to the labyrinth with the 13-hour clock and a fairy on the back leg.

I decided to get playful with my fashion images because the artist in me just can’t do something basic, I wanted to add in subtle elements to connect to the movie, in ‘Turn Back’ I added in a clock overlay to symbolize the clock from the movie.

I absolutely love this style, the colours are stunning and the imagery is really cool, I also love the subtle elements like to 13-hour clock on the hip and the fairy on the back of the left leg. This is probably one of my favourite prints they have included in these collections.

Within You Leggings

Within You‘ features the stair scene inspired by the works of M.C Escher. This print is really cool it not only features the stairs but also has Jareth, Sarah and Toby on the print.

This has to be one of my favourite scenes from the movie and I love that now I wear it on my body.

I wanted to add a really awesome background reminiscent of the M.C Escher print but due to copyright, I decided not to, instead I went with a bubble which is inspired by the crystal balls in the movie. I downloaded the photoshop brush from Brusheezy, just in case your interested.

Blackmilk has the most amazing pieces and the quality of their products is great, I’m not big on purchasing brand new clothing because I don’t want to contribute to landfill or other impacts it can have on the environment, the only times I will purchase is when I know a piece will be in my wardrobe for years to come or its something really special.

Blackmilk for me fits into this category because they create such high-quality unique pieces I know that I will have this in my wardrobe for many years to come, so I don’t mind splurging occasionally on their pieces.

I hope you enjoyed this post, is anyone else a huge labyrinth fan like me? What’s your favourite scene from the movie?

Beauty Room Make Over + Tour | Life of Dahlia

Beauty Room Make Over + Tour | Life Of Dahlia

Hey guys, I’m so excited to share this with you its been a long time coming. I remember sharing my really old beauty room years ago, back then I had a second-hand vintage dressing table as my vanity and green walls. Last year I decided that It was time for a change I wanted a more grown-up beauty room, it was time to get rid of the green walls and upgrade my vanity.

So much has changed and I’m so excited to share it with you, Its taken a long time to get my room to where I want it to be and even now there is still room for improvement.

MY OLD BEAUTY ROOM

Beauty Room Tour | Life Of Dahlia

I thought it would be interesting to show you a before and after photos, from how it was originally which was dark and cluttered. I have an obsessive personality so I tend to hoard things, I’m getting better as I get older and I like a less cluttered environment these days.

UPDATING MY BEAUTY ROOM

Beauty Room Tour | Life Of Dahlia

Its taken a while to update my room, it definitely didn’t happen overnight. I started with getting rid of things like decluttering my wardrobe so I could fit the dresses and accessories that I use these for self-portraits in the wardrobe and get rid of that clothes hanger that was taking up so much room.

Next was changing up my vanity, my old one was kindly donated to my older sister she has had her eye on it for years so I gave it to her. My new one looks expensive but honestly, the mirror was the most expensive thing ($300) the desk is itself is from Ikea and cost me under $300 to put together.

I needed more lighting in this room because it is in a corner where it just doesn’t get a lot of natural light. I’ve always wanted a mirror like this, my love for vintage things made me want one of those big Hollywood style mirrors and boy does it add extra light to the room.

Other than the desk and mirror the only other furniture I purchased was a small cube bookshelf for a small bit of extra storage and to place my Kristy Mitchell’s Wonderland book on. That thing is so heavy and big I actually can’t put it on a normal shelf it needs to lay on something.

MY BEAUTY ROOM NOW

Beauty Room Make Over + Tour | Life Of Dahlia

My vision for this room was to go light and airy, I wanted to be able to fill my space with a subtle fantasy vibe based on my love for the movie Labyrinth but also to add lots of art. I wanted to merge my styles into one space but without being over cluttered.

Beauty Room Make Over + Tour | Life Of Dahlia

I wanted to be able to see my art and makeup collection, so adding art on to my walls or on top of my shelves while displaying my makeup collection in containers on the bookshelves themselves so that I could see them all. I would love to get some proper holders for my collection but in the meantime, I just picked up some acrylic containers from Kmarts kitchen section.

Beauty Room Make Over + Tour | Life Of Dahlia

I added a chandelier from Bunnings it cost me under $100 (I can’t remember the actual price and I’m unsure if they still sell it), I have a matching one in my bedroom. I added this because I always loved the chandeliers in the Labyrinth ballroom scene so I wanted to add one in to add that element.

Beauty Room Make Over + Tour | Life Of Dahlia

My pride and joy is this vintage wedding dress that I found for $30 at an op shop many years ago, I love it because it reminds me a little bit of Sarah’s dress in the Labyrinth ballroom scene, so I love to have it displayed in the corner of my room.

You’ll notice all throughout my room are little nods to my love for fantasy and vintage things with accessories and little bits of decor.

I decided to rotate my room a bit, by moving the vanity to the other wall so I get light streaming in through the window and moved the big bookshelf to where the vanity used to be, it works much better now and feels less cluttered.

I hope you love my room as much as I do and maybe find some inspiration for your own beauty room, I’ve put together a small video to show of my new beauty room feel free to check it out below.

If you have any questions let me know in the comments and I’ll try my best to answer.

I forgot to mention that I get most of my art through Society 6 just in case you were wondering, but Etsy also has some great artists as well. If you are curious about any of the artwork feel free to ask and I can try and find the artist I purchased it from.

Rock N’ Roll Collab with MorandFX, Pt 2. Fashion| Life of Dahlia

Fashion: Rock N’ Roll Collab with MorandFX, Pt 2. Fashion| Life of Dahlia

Hey Guy’s, I’m back for part 2 of this collab post with Peta Morand. I had so much fun creating this makeup look and taking all the photos. In this post I’m sharing my fashion post, I couldn’t do this look and not go all out an take some fashion photos while wearing it. Below I’m sharing a bunch of fun pics that I took, I had to let my artsy photographer side come out and play with some coloured lighting I knew it would just add to this look.

Styling My Outfit

I love when I can take fun pieces from my wardrobe and show them off, I’ve always had a rock chick style, except for those couple of years I wore pastels, yuck, no just kidding it was a bit of a phase I went through. I still have bits of colour in my wardrobe but most of the colours that I like are darker these days, I also have a bit of an obsession with jackets especially motorcycle style like the one pictured above, I have like five or six in different colours.

_MG_2146blog

I think because I’ve always had a unique style is why I love thrift or op shopping as we call it here in Aus, I can find so many unique pieces that you just can’t find in the mainstream shops.

Aspiring Musician

This is my beautiful baby I purchased her a couple of years ago so I could learn how to play, I’m still getting there, I need to find more time to practice my brain gets so focused on things that I forget to chill out and practice my guitar or read stuff like that. It’s something I need to work on.

Anyway, I had this image in my head and I knew I had to take it, I think it looks really awesome. I’m really happy that I got to pay homage to David Bowie in my own way, I have always loved that he wasn’t afraid to be unique and different, I think that’s what made him such an amazing person not to mention his incredible music that warmed the hearts of so many people. It was such a sad day for me when I heard he passed away like many others he will always have a place in my heart.

Don’t’ forget to go check out Peta’s Alice Cooper recreation over on her Instagram @morandfx, Go check her out and give her a follow and some likes.

Also I would love for you to get check out my Instagram @erinappbeauty so you can keep updated with what I’m doing, I have lots of fun over there.
