Hey everyone, so I mentioned a couple of months ago about doing a post on my blogging and photography set up, with all the focus last month being on mental health I decided to leave it until after all that was over. I’m going to give you a brief overview of what I have personally used and include links of where you can purchase something similar.
I’ve been a photography junkie for many years so some of the stuff I use might be a bit more advanced to what you might want or need so I’ll try to include some options that are more simple.
Blogging Set Up
Where I write my blog posts.
I’m not about perfect pictures so apologies for the mess, this is where I do most of my editing and writing for my blog posts. I also have a Dell laptop that I use when I need to take a computer with me.
My desktop computer was put together for me so I can’t give you those details and I’ve been thinking about upgrading my monitor soon to a new one I’ll update this post when I do.
My Laptop: Dell Inspiron 15 5559
I’ve had this for a few years so I’m sure there is something similar and newer out there, check out the Dell website for options.
I really enjoy this computer it has everything I need tech wise for my photo-editing software and being Windows 10 Its fairly user-friendly, I can use the shop to download apps. I think newer versions have a touchscreen mine doesn’t have that but that doesn’t really bother me.
I would definitely recommend Dell computers & Windows 10 (just be aware that it updates a lot.)
I highly recommend having an external hard drive for storage, not only can use get one with extra space than what your computer provides you with but its also great for backing up your files. It also allows you to take your files on the go.
I recommend the brand Western Digital I’ve had a few hard drives from them and I think they are great quality and usually have a good rating. You can purchase two kinds of hard drives one that directly plugs into your computer and that becomes its power source and then there are ones that require to be plugged into a wall socket for power.
I have one that is the later I like it but unfortunately, you do need a power source to power for it so that should be a factor you will need to think about. As always I recommend looking doing your own research and get advice from a techy hopefully you have someone in your circle that can help out if not talk to someone at your local computer store.
You can purchase Western Digital from the following places:
My Computer Chair: Lincoln Chair White from Officeworks
I recently had to upgrade my computer chair, I wanted to get something nice and comfortable, so I ordered the Lincoln Chair in White for Officeworks.com. It has a good quality faux leather finish and it’s really comfortable, I should have upgraded a long time ago.
Wacom Intros Pro
Photography and digital art have been a hobby of mine for years, I use a tablet from Wacom to edit my photos, it gives me control over detail and blending. This is not a necessity for a blogger unless your a tech, art or photography blogger then you might want one.
I use the Wacom pro medium but I recommend getting something smaller for a beginner, they have a huge range to suit everyone’s needs and budget.
You can purchase one here:
I use the following software for Photo-editing
- Photoshop CC
- Lightroom CC
I do some pretty advanced editing techniques so I find having Adobe Photoshop is a good option for me, I have the photography creative cloud subscription, It allows me to have the updated versions of these two programs which I like. You can purchase Creative Cloud Subscriptions through the Adobe website but also through some retailers.
I also use a bunch of apps for editing on my phone I’ll be talking about these in a couple of weeks so keep an eye out for that. I’ll update this post with a link once that goes up.
For brainstorming I like to use a few different apps, I mentioned them in a previous post. I like using apps because I can write down ideas on the go or at any time, I don’t need to carry a notebook around with and I can easily access them when I need them.
Photography Set Up
Some of my set up is probably more advanced than what the average blogger needs, photography has been a hobby of mine for a long time so I have accumulated a few things like studio flashes, etc.
I just recently updated my camera, I’ve had my old one for going on 10 years, I’ve only ever had to replace a lens that I broke and she is still going strong. I wanted to get something that was lighter and more compact, in the terms of photography I probably downgraded but I’m not a professional and I felt that the difference between the one I purchased and the more modern version of my old one wasn’t that different other than the price tag.
I shopped around when I purchased my new camera to get the best price, I would recommend waiting for sales so that you can get a better price. This camera retails up to $800, I purchased mine for I think under $700 because I shopped around.
Other than the fact that this camera is lighter making it easy to use, it also has a guide that can help you learn how to use it. Another factor of me wanting to purchase a new camera was because my old-school camera did not have video or audio functions. This camera has great video functions which means I can record videos for my youtube channel (coming soon) and take video when I’m out or on holiday.
I love that this is nice and compact, it makes it easy to handle and I don’t feel like I’m lugging around a brick like my old one. It is also easier to travel with, which was also another reason why I went with this over the 80d.
Other than price difference and potential size difference, it also doesn’t have to weatherproofing like its more expensive counterpart so this would be a factor you might want to think about if you’re interested in check it out.
This camera comes with an 18-55 mm lens (see info below) which is great to start you off, the quality is quite nice but I’m not overly picky, it does what its purpose it and that’s good. A great option for beginners.
Where you can purchase this camera:
This is the lens that came with the camera, it is a great beginner lens and I like having a smaller lens as well. I may upgrade at some time in the future but for now, I don’t mind using this one.
I have the older version of this but I thought it would be helpful to include the newer version because that’s what is currently available. I would say if you can upgrade to a lens like this do it because they are much nicer and they are much better quality than the standard kit lenses.
Tamron is a great brand who makes great quality lenses for different branded cameras, for example, this lens can be purchased with a Canon or Nikon mount. I recommend checking them out if you want to upgrade your lens.
What I use to take my flatlay’s and product pictures.
For my flat lays I recently picked up a table from Kmart because getting up and down off the floor was getting too much for me because of my fibromyalgia (also another reason I purchase a lighter camera) it was super inexpensive and it’s small enough that it is easy to store.
You can purchase it from the Kmart Australia website or from your local store.
I use a bunch of things for my flatlay backgrounds, from Cardboard sheets you can pick up from Officeworks to vinyl rolls from Kmart to pieces of clothing. I recommend picking up some stuff up like this its great to change up your background or gives you something to use if you don’t have a fancy floor, table or countertop to use.
What I use to take my fashion pictures
I would love to get out and take my fashion pictures outside in awesome locations, but due to my anxiety and not having someone with my photography knowledge I do it with a studio backdrop, lights and a tripod to put my camera on because it’s more convenient for me.
I picked up an inexpensive studio backdrop set of eBay many years ago (like the one pictured above), it came with a black backdrop and I’m still using it till this day. I actually need to replace it now it’s getting old and it has seen better days but these are great for beginners to more advanced photographers.
I have also purchased a white backdrop since then and I also have a couple of paper rolls for it in yellow and purple. You can pick up inexpensive material backdrops of eBay or purchase large sheets to use.
eBay has a large range of options so I’ll just link a list of them here.
I used studio flashes with a modelling light for my photography, I picked a set of three I believe from a local camera store for around $400 many years ago. They came with three lights, three stands and some umbrellas. This was some time ago but I’m sure you could find something similar, I, however, don’t think a beginner needs these, I think you could get away with using a standard modelling light like the ones pictured above, this would be great for someone also who wanted to use it for video purposes.
I’ll include a link here to an eBay search where you can find similar options.
I hope this post was helpful and gave you some insight into what I use for my blogging and photography set up. If you have any question feel free to leave a comment below and I’ll do my best to answer them.
